Caihong Liu

  • PhD candidate

Caihong Liu is a PhD candidate in the Climate Extremes group within the Department of Water and Climate Risk at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She obtained her MSc degree in Meteorology from Sun Yat-sen University in 2023, with a focus on the role of the westerly jet stream in extreme precipitation along the Yangtze River Valley in the early summer of 2020.

Furthermore, Caihong synthesized the latest research on the characteristics and potential climate forcings of such extreme Mei-yu and discussed the challenges and outlooks for prediction and numerical modeling. Then her focus switched to atmospheric heatwaves owing to the globally catastrophic heatwaves in 2022.

She is interested in exploring how the jet stream affects atmospheric heatwaves by using advanced climate models and machine learning techniques. Currently, Caihong is working on her PhD project sponsored by the China Scholarship Council (CSC). Her research focuses on the dynamic interaction between mid-latitude circulation patterns and concurrent heatwave extremes, as well as the causal relationship between East Asian surface air temperature and mid-latitude circumglobal teleconnection.
