Chiem van Straaten

  • PhD candidate at VU Amsterdam
  • Visiting scientist at Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI)

Chiem van Straaten was educated in economics and hydrology at VU Amsterdam and Utrecht University. He transitioned into atmospheric science by the end of his master’s degree as he worked at the KNMI on quantitative ensemble precipitation forecasts. Currently, he pursues a PhD in the long range forecasting of European weather in project IMPRINT. Such long range forecasts require an understanding of drivers of predictable extreme events. Chiem uses statistical tools to quantify these driving mechanisms and applies corrections to numerical weather model outputs when the mechanisms are incorrectly resolved.
