Joshua Kiesel is a postdoctoral researcher in the Climate Extremes group, which is part of the department of Water and Climate Risk of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

In 2021, Joshua received his PhD degree in coastal geography from Kiel University in Germany. In his work, Joshua uses hydrodynamic modelling to simulate coastal flooding from local to regional scales and to explore the consequences of sea-level rise for our coastlines. Joshua has a keen interest in the conservation of coastal and marine ecosystems and is exploring how more natural shorelines can support climate change adaptation to the impacts of extreme sea levels and sea-level rise.

As part of the Climate Extremes group, Joshua works on the EU Horizon Europe project KNOWING, where he expands upon his coastal flooding research by incorporating compound events through the utilization of state-of-the-art hydrodynamic models. Specifically, he is interested in how extreme sea levels, heavy precipitation events and landscape scale changes in land use interact and affect coastal, riverine and pluvial flooding. Within KNOWING, he further examines the interactions and trade-offs between nature-based adaptation measures to flooding and climate mitigation objectives.
