GOTHAM
Our contribution
Dim Coumou leads GOTHAM’s Work Package “Drivers behind anomalous mid-latitude flow linked to extreme weather in boreal summer and winter”. We study atmospheric teleconnections that have received little attention so far: Giorgia di Capua studies, in collaboration with partners from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, the 2-way interaction of the Indian Monsoon with the mid-latitude flow. Further, Efi Rousi, in collaboration with Stefan Rahmstorf, the role of the recent slowdown of the Atlantic circulation on recent weather extremes. We use a combination of observational data and climate model experiments and systematically apply machine-learning techniques (Causal Effect Networks, Self-Organizing Maps, etc.) to shed light on those aspects.
Summer school
In September 2017 we hosted a successful Summer School at PIK, with the aim of training young scientists on a unique combination of interdisciplinary scientific topics and tools relevant for understanding teleconnections and their role in causing extreme weather events. The school comprised of lectures as well as tutorial sessions by some of the world’s leading experts in the field, both from GOTHAM partner institutes and external ones.
